Our Church Staff



Senior Pastor – John King  

John has served in ministry since 1973, all in pastorates except for two years as an instructor and Dean of the Graduate School at Appalachian Bible College. He has served churches in North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, and here at Johnston Chapel. He and his wife, Jeanie, have three grown daughters and seven grandchildren. John earned a Bachelor of Theology degree at Piedmont Bible College (now Piedmont International University), Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees at Grace Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois.

Major areas of responsibility:
• Shepherding the flock through preaching & teaching of the Word, as well as pastoral ministry
• Oversight of the staff and Deacons
• Providing leadership and vision casting for the church
• Oversight of Small Groups and Adult Bible Fellowships



Pastor of Administration and Music – Jim Nofsinger

Jim has served in ministry since 1977 focused in Youth, Music and Administrative Pastorate. Jim has served in a church in Virginia and here at Johnston Chapel since 1982. He and his wife, Brenda, have three grown daughters and ten grandchildren. Jim earned an Associate Degree in Sales & Merchandising in 1973 from University of Akron Community and Technical College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Religious Education with a Music Minor from Piedmont Bible College in 1977.

Major areas of responsibility:
• To provide help and support to all ministries of Johnston Chapel
• Oversight of the church finances, staff and other administrative responsibilities
• Oversight of the Music Ministry
• Oversight of DMA Fellowship


Pastor of Care and Outreach – Jim Simmons

Jim began serving in ministry as a volunteer in children’s ministry shortly following his conversion in 1977 . He served in a number of areas of ministry throughout the years as Sunday school teacher, deacon, youth worker, camp counselor, etc. In 1999, Pastor John King asked Jim to come on staff as Associate Pastor of Care and Outreach. Jim has a degree in Labor Relations and Labor Studies and worked for twenty years in the mining industry as a labor relations consultant. He is married to Jennifer and they have two grown children and five grandchildren.

Major areas of responsibility:

• Visitation of hospital patients, homebound, visitors to the church, special and emergency needs.
• Counseling – crisis, pre-marital and counseling regarding ongoing family needs.
• Outreach – Jail Ministry, Celebrate Recovery, 3-D Archery, and other outreach opportunities.



Pastor of Youth and Missions – Dan Thyng

Dan is a graduate of Pensacola Christian College.  He has a Master of Arts degree in Bible Exposition from Pensacola Theological Seminary.  He has served in Youth and Missions ministry at Johnston Chapel since January 2013.  He previously served as a missionary to Papua New Guinea for six years with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism.  He and his wife, Amy, have five children: Tyler, Kate, Claire, Ben and Elijah.

Pastor of Children’s Ministry – James Walsh 

James is a graduate of Appalachian Bible College. James earned his Bachelor of Arts in Bible Theology with an emphasis in Pastoral Greek from Appalachian Bible College. James Walsh has been serving in ministry since 2001, as a volunteer, working in children and youth ministries. James served as an Associate Pastor for almost 7 years in Baxley, Georgia and then at Johnston Chapel in July 2014. He and his wife Sarah have three boys, Josiah, Jeremiah, and Joshua.

Major Areas of Responsibility include:
• Shepherding the children’s ministry and volunteer leaders
• Oversight of AWANA, Children’s Church, Children’s Fellowships and Nursery
• Development of pre-teen discipleship programs and mission experiences
• Oversight of summer VBS, High Power Soccer, Centershot, camps and other activities.
