As most of you know, I spent some time with Campus Crusade in Russia after graduating from college in 1999. I first went to Ulan Ude, Siberia to work with college students. Then, I returned in 2002 to Moscow to work on the national team.   Having grown up a gymnast and watching the Russian gymnasts on TV, I was intrigued with the country. The gymnasts looked so sad. So I decided then that I wanted to go to Russia to see why. When the opportunity arose for me to spend the summer of 1998 there, I jumped at the chance. Even though communism fell in 1991, I was amazed that the Russians I encountered had never heard of Jesus. So when I graduated, I knew the Lord was calling me back to share the good news of His Son with them.

I loved my time in Russia. I did have moments of thinking Lord, what am I doing here? Me?  These thoughts usually occurred when I was feeling down or cold J. But the Lord in His graciousness brought people to Himself. What a testament to His faithfulness to this country after years of darkness!

In the upcoming September/October issue of Worldwide Challenge, we are featuring an article about Voronezh, Russia titled A Brave New Face. Writer Sarah Freyermuth highlights Lena Lysenko, a Russian student, sharing her faith with her peers. When Sarah came back from interviewing Lena, she was unsure of how to tell her story. I remember her telling me that her story seemed common in Campus Crusade: a college student sharing the gospel. Then I told her, “IN RUSSIA!!!” Just 10 years ago, Russians barely knew of Jesus. Now a 23-year-old Russian is talking to her friends about Him! I love A Brave New Face because it showcases how the Lord has made the dark, light. What a blessing it has been to be a part of His story in this beloved country.

Thanks to each of you for your part in my ministry with  Campus Crusade for Christ. With your help and the Lord’s, many have come to know Him. Thank you.
