The Greatest King

Luke 2:11

           

 

I.          God promised the coming of the King.

            A.  God promised David a Son who would rule forever. - II Samuel 7:12-16

B.     The promised Messiah would be David’s Son and yet his Lord. - Matthew 22:41-46 cp. Psalm 110:1

 

II.        Jesus was born King.

A.    He was the promised King through the line of His guardian Joseph.

      - Matthew 1:1-17

B.  He was the promised King through the line of the Virgin Mary.

      - Luke 3:23-38

 

III.       Jesus lived a kingly life.

A.  He was kingly in His character. - John 18:38

B.  He was kingly in his speech. - Matthew 7:28-29

C.  He was kingly in his power. - Matthew 28:18.

D.  He was kingly in the nature of His kingdom. - Matthew 5:3ff

 

IV.       Jesus was rejected as King. - John 1:10-11; John. 19:15

 

V.        Some were born again and submitted to the rule of the King. - John 3:3-7

 

VI.       Our risen Lord will reign eternally as King over all.

            A.  As God promised David. - II Samuel 7:12-16

            B.  As Isaiah prophesied. - 9:6-7

            C.  As the angel told Mary. - Luke 1:31-33

            D.  As the One Who is declared to be King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Application: Our Present Duty to our King

·         Trust Him, be born again and become a part of His kingdom. - John 3:1-7

·         Yield to His kingdom rule in every area of our lives.

·         Live in anticipation of His coming. - Revelation 22:20

·         Be occupied in doing the work He has given us to do. - Luke 19:13
